Summer BBQ gone wrong? How to know if you have food poisoning

Grilled meat and vegetables on outdoor barbecue grill with flames, summer cookout setting

Food left out in the Florida heat doesn’t stay safe for long. In this heat, bacteria reproduce quickly. A cookout left exposed too long can lead to serious health issues by evening. Food poisoning is a valid concern if you’re feeling stomach distress a few hours after eating.

Emerald Coast Urgent Care sees these cases regularly, especially during the summer. We’re open daily at our Destin, Panama City Beach and Inlet Beach locations, with no appointment required to be seen.

If you’re feeling bad enough to wonder whether you should come in, the answer is probably yes.

How to tell if it’s food poisoning

The hard part about food poisoning is that it shares a lot of symptoms with the stomach flu. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea show up in both cases, which makes it easy for you to misinterpret what’s happening. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that symptoms of food poisoning can begin within a few hours of eating contaminated food, sometimes as quickly as 30 minutes, depending on the bacteria involved.

However, a stomach bug generally appears one to two days after exposure. If you were fine at noon and felt awful by 3 p.m., the food is usually the first thing to consider.

What food poisoning actually feels like

The symptoms of food poisoning can vary quite a bit, but the most common ones come on fast and hit you hard. With food poisoning, you might notice things like:

  • Sudden nausea or vomiting
  • Stomach cramping
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever or chills

The intensity often depends on the type of bacteria involved and how much contaminated food you ate.

Worse, the intense heat can help bacteria spread. It’s precisely the combination of heat and humidity that allows bacteria to reproduce quickly.

When to stop waiting it out

With rest and fluids, most mild food poisoning cases clear up on their own. However, sometimes waiting isn’t the best strategy, so it’s important to recognize the signs that something more serious is happening.

Come in to see us if you’re experiencing:

  • Symptoms that haven’t improved after two days
  • A fever over 102 degrees
  • Dizziness
  • Blood in your stool
  • Severe abdominal pain that keeps getting worse

It’s important for vulnerable groups like children, older adults and those with weak immune systems to get medical attention quickly. These groups face a heightened risk of dehydration, and it could escalate into a severe condition if we don’t address it soon.

Why dehydration is a primary concern

When your body loses fluids faster than you can replace them, dehydration becomes a genuine threat. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, replacing lost fluids and electrolytes is the most important treatment for food poisoning. Older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system can especially benefit from oral rehydration.

Sipping water and electrolyte drinks can help you stay ahead of it if you’re catching things early. But if you’re unable to keep any fluids down at all, that’s a sign you need more than home care and should come in.

The Cleveland Clinic says that your body needs electrolytes to keep the fluids you’re drinking, so plain water alone may not be enough.

IV hydration is something we offer at Emerald Coast Urgent Care, and it can make a real difference when oral fluids just aren’t staying down.

What a visit to Emerald Coast Urgent Care looks like

When you come in to our clinic, we’ll ask about your symptoms, when they started and what you ate in the hours before. The timeline serves to clarify for us whether food poisoning is the probable reason or if something else is the cause.

We can also look for dehydration symptoms and gauge your general well-being. Based on that, we can suggest treatments, such as IV fluids, anti-nausea medication or advice for managing symptoms at home for the next couple of days.

For most simple cases, we won’t need lab testing to pinpoint the bacteria. If your symptoms are severe, or if there’s anything odd about the picture, we can perform a more detailed examination.
